The United Kingdom will get a Labour government after 14 years since 2010, and Keir Starmer is all set to be the new Prime Minister of UK
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated Keir Starmer on winning the UK elections and said he was looking forward to a positive collaboration with the Labour leader. He also had a message for outgoing prime minister Rishi Sunak, a report by NDTV said.
Starmer is set to replace Sunak as UK Prime Minister after the Labour Party defeated the Conservatives in yesterday’s elections.
Taking to X, PM Modi said, “Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to @KeirStarmer on the remarkable victory in the UK general elections. I look forward to our positive and constructive collaboration to further strengthen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in all areas, fostering mutual growth and prosperity.”
As per reports filed by The Mint, Starmer told supporters during a victory rally on Friday that “change begins now” and vowed to restore Britain to the service of working people. “I have a clear message for you all today: this is a changed Labour Party. What my Labour government will seek with India is a relationship based on our shared values of democracy and aspiration. That will seek a free trade agreement (FTA), we share that ambition, but also a new strategic partnership for global security, climate security, economic security,” he had declared last year during the India Global Forum.
Reportedly, Starmer also ought to reassure British Hindus that there is “absolutely no place for Hinduphobia in Britain” during a visit to the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in London last week.
In another tweet, PM Modi thanked Rishi Sunak, Britain’s first Indian-origin premier, for his efforts during his tenure as the PM of UK.
Taking to X, PM Modi said,”Thank you, Rishi Sunak, for your admirable leadership of the UK, and your active contribution to deepen the ties between India and the UK during your term in office. Best wishes to you and your family for the future.”
The Conservative Party, led by Sunak, suffered its worst electoral defeat in history, attributed to issues such as the cost-of-living crisis, internal turmoil, and voter dissatisfaction with the party’s performance over the past years, as quoted by India Today.
