Assam: AFSPA withdrawn from West Karbi Anglong

While, AFSPA has been removed from the district, the law which gives special powers to the forces still prevails in 8 dists.
The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act has been withdrawn from one more district in Assam. The government said decision to withdraw AFSPA from West Karbi Anglong will come into effect from October1.
However, the AFSPA has been retained in 8 districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. The AFSPA will also continue in Lakhipur sub-division in Cachar district.
It was on November 27, 1990 when the entire state was declared disturbed area and was brought under AFSPA. Since then it has been extended seven times.
In September 2017, centre delegated the power to Assam as well as Manipur to impose or withdraw AFSPA from their respective states.
AFSPA was removed from some areas of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh and now under Amit Shah, more recently, the act was completely removed from 23 districts of Assam, and from areas under 15 police stations each in Manipur and Nagaland.
