In a rare incident, a tribal woman gave birth to conjoined twins at a hospital in Tripura.
The twins are reportedly joined at the head.
According to Dr. Kajal Das, medical superintendent and a senior gynecologist at the Gomati district hospital where the twins were born, the condition of both the mother and the newborns is stable but under supervision.
He added that Rebati Reang (25) of Balarampara under Karbook subdivision in Gomati district was admitted on May 26 with seven months of pregnancy. During an ultrasound sonography checkup, it was detected that she was carrying conjoined twins.
Dr. Das said that this is his first case of conjoined twins and informed that the twins would need complicated surgery to get separated, however it is not possible in the in the region.
The conjoined twins have joined heads, four legs, and four arms.
Conjoined twins are a very rare phenomenon that occurs in one in 50 to 60 thousand cases.
Conjoined twins are formed when a single fertilized egg does not fully split during the process of forming identical twins. If the zygote division occurs after two weeks of the development of the embroyonic disc, it results in the formation of conjoined twins.
Another reason is when a fusion of two fertilized eggs occurs earlier in development.
