Under the Union Minister, a committee has been formed by the Centre to discuss the issues and find solutions.

TIPRA Motha founder and Tripura royal scion, Pradyot Debbarma met Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai in New Delhi on Thursday and discussed the proposed 125th amendment of the Indian Constitution.

MoS Rai heads the committee set up by Centre to discuss issues related to the autonomous councils of northeast.

Taking to X, Debbarma wrote, “Met the Home minister for state Nityanand Rai Ji under whom the 125th amendment of the indian Constitution a panel has been formed to discuss the issues relating to the councils of Northeast . He was extremely understanding and assuring that the genuine aspersions of the indigenous people of the region will be addressed very soon.”

On Wednesday, Debbarma met Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, and Advisor for North East of Ministry of Home Affairs AK Misra and discussed the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord and the 125th Amendment.

The 10 tribal autonomous councils of northeast are pressing for the 125th Amendment of the Constitution to ensure direct funds for the autonomous councils and land rights of the tribals living in the 6th Schedule areas of northeast.

The 10 Autonomous District Councils and Territorial Councils are spread across Sixth Schedule areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura.

Of them, Assam has three councils: North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). While NCHAC and KAAC are governed by the BJP, BTR is run by the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).

In Meghalaya, the three autonomous district councils — covering the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Hills divisions, respectively — are all governed by the National People’s Party-led ruling alliance, of which BJP is a part.

TIPRA Motha runs the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.

In Mizoram, the Lai and Chakma Autonomous District Councils are governed by the Mizo National Front (MNF), which is also a constituent of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), while the BJP leads the Mara council
