Tripura: Student injured after two groups clash at Maharaja Bir Bikram College

The injured student was rushed to AGMC and GBP hospital for treatment.

A fourth-semester student was injured in a clash during the admission process at Maharaja Bir Bikram College, the oldest college in Tripura.

The altercation, which took place between two student organizations over running help desk for new students during admission, resulted in a student sustaining severe head injuries.

The injured student, identified as Aman Debbarma, a fourth-semester student and member of the Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), was attacked when he came out from the Principal’s room after attempting to obtain a voluntary identity card to run a help desk for new students on behalf of TSF.

The injured student was rushed to AGMC and GBP hospital for treatment.

Monish Debbarma, vice president of the Agartala Town Committee of TSF, condemned the incident, alleging that members of the ABVP were responsible for the attack.

According to him, the ABVP did not want TSF to set up any help desks and insisted on having exclusive control over such centers.

In response to the incident, a TSF delegation met Dr. Nirmal Bhadra, the Principal of MBB College, demanding appropriate action against the perpetrators and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

When questioned about the steps taken following the altercation, Dr. Bhadra stated that he had not received any complaints from any individual student, he had received complaints from student organizations saying their member was attacked.

He noted that when he checked the scene, he did not find anyone, including the injured student. Dr. Bhadra acknowledged that such incidents occasionally occur as the college lacks a boundary wall, allowing outsiders to enter the premises.

He did say that police were called to remove the outsiders from the campus.

Dr. Bhadra suggested that as the clash started over setting up of help desk, there is no need for any student organization to set up help desks, as the college has an adequate number of teachers available to assist new students with the admission process.
