Tripura: Police seize around 20k cough syrup bottles from Silchar-Agartala train

The anti-narcotics department of the Tripura Police and customs department searched the Silchar-Agartala train and recovered the contraband from a parcel in one of the bogies.

In a major victory for Tripura Police in the war against drugs, more than 20,000 bottles of cough syrup were seized.

SP Narcotics Sharmishta Chakroborty led the operations along with SDPO Amtali, Ashish Das. The police are still continuing with their search operations and are looking for a bigger network behind the contraband smuggling. There are no reports of any arrest made with regards to the raid.

The police personnel associated with the raid revealed that they are trying to find a bigger network with regards to the smuggling of cough syrup in the region which they believe originates from neighboring Bangladesh.

On the basis of specific information, the SP of the anti-narcotics department of the Tripura Police about illegal transportation of contraband by train, a joint team of the police, anti-narcotics and customs department searched the Silchar-Agartala train and from its parcel bogie recovered more than 20000 bottles of cough syrup.

Speaking to Northeast Live, SDPO Amtali who along with SP Narcotics Sarmista Chakrabory headed the secret operation informed that the search is still going on as there is every possibility of finding more contraband.

In recent times police other than contraband police have also seized large quality of dry marijuana from Agartala rail station and also in Assam indicating railway is being used by drug peddlers for transported illegal items to and from Tripura.

Police and other agencies are investigating the incident and trying to find those engaged in the illegal trade.

Cough syrup is often being used as a substitute for liquor and has a huge demand across the border in Bangladesh.
