The arrest, which took place near the Dharmanagar railway station a day ago, highlights the growing concerns surrounding border security

In a significant crackdown on illegal immigration, the Dharmanagar Police have apprehended four Bangladeshi nationals, drawing renewed attention to the persistent issues of border security and illegal infiltration into Tripura.

The arrest, which took place near the Dharmanagar railway station a day ago, highlights the growing concerns surrounding border security and the unchecked influx of immigrants from Bangladesh into the state.

According to Himadri Sarkar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dharmanagar police station, the four individuals were detained after officers on patrol observed their suspicious behavior near the railway station area. Upon interrogation, it was revealed that they were Bangladeshi citizens who had unlawfully crossed the international border.

The arrested individuals—identified as Mohammad Hanif, Yusuf Ali, Parul Begum, and Jasmin Akhtar—had entered Tripura through the Kailashahar border in Unakoti district. They intended to travel further into India seeking employment opportunities.

Hanif disclosed that their primary goal was to find work in Bengaluru. “We were planning to go to Bengaluru in search of jobs,” Hanif stated, highlighting the economic pressures that prompted their journey.

The group reportedly relied on local brokers who facilitated their night time crossing into Indian territory. The Dharmanagar Police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend these brokers, aiming to dismantle the networks that enable such illegal activities.

He further explained that economic hardships in Bangladesh had compelled them to seek opportunities abroad, with India being a common destination for such migrants.

This incident adds to the growing tally of illegal immigration cases in northern Tripura, a district that has increasingly become a gateway for Bangladeshis attempting to enter India.

This incident adds to a troubling trend of illegal immigration cases in northern Tripura, which has increasingly become a transit point for Bangladeshis entering India unlawfully. While law enforcement occasionally succeeds in apprehending some of these infiltrators, there are mounting concerns about the effectiveness of current border control measures.

Earlier this month, the situation at the Tripura-Bangladesh border was further marred by the recovery of a minor girl’s bullet-ridden body by the Border Security Force (BSF). Later her father identified the deceased and the body was handed over to the Bangladesh in presence of boder guards and police of both nationals.

The frequent breaches of the Tripura-Bangladesh border are a matter of great concern, questioning the effectiveness of the current border control measures.

Despite the presence of the Border Security Force (BSF) and other agencies, many still find ways to cross illegally, often using the services of organized human trafficking networks.

The arrest of these four individuals has once again brought the issue of illegal immigration to the forefront, with calls for stricter border surveillance and better coordination between central and state authorities.

The Dharmanagar police have already launched an investigation to trace the brokers involved in facilitating the illegal crossing and to prevent further instances of such infiltrations.
