Tripura Minister Sushanta Chowdhury writes to Union Waterways Ministers to further enhance India-Bangladesh water connectivity

The Tripura Government in it's letter has batted for setting up a new linkage of Gomati River of Tripura with Meghna River system in Bangladesh through the Sonamur-Daudkandi protocol route
In a bid to enhance the India-Bangladesh connectivity through waterway, the Tripura Government has sought further intervention of the Centre.
Aimed at accelarating development through waterways, Tripura Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs minister Sushanta Chowdhury has written a letter to Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal to his attention on various key aspects pertaining to the matter.
The Tripura minister in the letter has batted for setting up a new linkage of Gomati River of Tripura with Meghna River system in Bangladesh through the Sonamur-Daudkandi protocol route (IB protocol route 9 &10).
Another key aspect as mentioned in the letter is the dredging of Indo-Bangladesh waterways Protocol Route (Sonamura-Daudkandi) ebyond International Border inside Bangladesh (20.00 KM) including the “no man’s land” in order to achieve successful dredging and fruitful result of the dredging of Gomati River in the Indian portion.
Not only this, the Tripura Government has also batted for initiatives to link the strategic Sonamura-Daudkandi waterway to ports in Bangladesh such as Ashuganj, Mongla and Chittagong. Further connecting with improtant Indian rivers like Ganga (National Waterway-1), Brahmaputra (National Waterway-2), Barak (National Waterway-16), ultimately, to connect to Haldia port in Kolkata through sea routes and Sittwe port of the Kaladan project in Myanmar.
The Tripura government has also sought the Centre’s approval to the proposed purchasing of at least 6-10 passenger vessels in order to boost tourism and make it easier for commuters to cross the River Gomati everyday.
Last but not the least, Tripura Minister Sushanta Chowdhury in his letter to union minister Sarbananda Sonowal also mentioned, “In order to realize our vision of “Ek Tripura, Sresth Tripura,” we gladly appeal for your support in the devellopment of inland water transportation in Tripura.”
