Tripura govt mulling to set up state-of-the-art Ayurvedic and Homeopathic Medical Colleges

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced that Tripura is planning to start both an Ayurveda and a Homeopathy medical college soon. This declaration came during his surprise inspection visit to the State Ayurvedic Hospital in Agartala.
Saha, who also serves as the Health and Education Minister, highlighted the high demand for services at the State Ayurvedic Hospital.
He noted that the current bed capacity of 50 is inadequate to meet the needs of the large number of patients who come from across the state for treatment. To address this, the state government plans to enhance the existing infrastructure and start an Ayurvedic medical college within the same building initially.
Accompanied by Health Secretary Kiren Gitte and other top health department officials, Saha revealed that the state government has written to the union government regarding the proposed Ayurvedic Hospital.
Saha added that this hospital will eventually be relocated to a new building next to the State Homeopathy Hospital at Renters Colony, where the state is also planning to establish a Homeopathy medical college.
Briefing newspersons, CM Saha said, “There is a planning on whether a Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital can be set up or not, the Secretary has already sent a letter in this regard (to the Centre). We will begin with the Ayurvedic Medical College. I am told that there is space near our State Homeopathic Hospital, so we are planning to set up an Ayurvedic Medical College and a Homeopathic Medical College together in that area. Problems will certainly be there, but I have given necessary instructions to resolve those at the earliest.
We will try so that all the necessary proceedings are completed early.”
The addition of these medical colleges is expected to not only improve healthcare facilities but also expand medical education opportunities in Tripura. The state aims to become an educational and medical hub, attracting patients and students from the Northeast region as well as neighboring Bangladesh.
Many patients from Bangladesh travel to Tripura as a transit point before heading to cities like Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad for advanced medical treatments. This initiative is part of Tripura’s broader strategy to enhance its healthcare and educational infrastructure, thereby positioning itself as a key player in the region.
