The traditional festival of Ganjan is being observed with utmost devotion in the rural parts of Tripura on Wednesday. The word Gajan is derived from the word Garjan or the sound made by Sanyasis during the festival.

In Das Para under RK Nagar in the outskirts of Agartala, devotees also known as gajan sanyasis practice their centuries old tradition and which is gradually getting lost.

Men dressed as Hindu gods and goddesses like Shiva, Parvati, Kali, Krishna and other deities performed various dances to the beat of drums and also enacted scenes from Hindu Mythology.

These sanyasis move from house to house where they are given various offerings as part of the ritual.

Gajan celebration is performed signifying the marriage of Siva, Nil or Dharmaraj with their respective consorts.

The festival is considered to be a very powerful festival that basically signifies the union of sun and earth.  People also believe that the festival will bring prosperity and will cleanse them of their sorrows and sins.

In Tripura, the festival is celebrated mainly on the last two days of the month of Chaitra and ends with Charak Puja.
