Advocate general Siddhartha Shankar Dey told the court that a response would be submitted on April 13

Tipra Motha, the main opposition part of Tripura has moved the high court against the state government accusing the Manik Saha-led state government of flouting the court’s direction in regard to holding village council (VC) polls under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.

Tipra Motha legislator Brishaketu Debbarma and party leader Anthony Debbarma in their petition before the court have mentioned that the terms of the village committees have ended in March 2021 and the villagers are facing a lot of problem in the absence of elected representatives.

The petitioners further alleged that despite two year have passed by and despite the High Court’s direction to conduct the polls in November last year, the state election commission has, so far, not said anything about conducting the polls.

Advocate general Siddhartha Shankar Dey told the court that a response would be submitted on April 13.

Earlier, the HC had directed the state election commissioner to conduct the polls by November last year, but the order was not complied with.

The Chief Justice expressed his displeasure at the two-year delay in conducting the polls, reports said.
