A shocking case of domestic violence and dowry harassment has surfaced from South Tripura, where a doctor has accused her IAS officer husband and in-laws of physically and verbally abusing her, demanding more dowry.
The victim, who hails from Kerala, alleged that her husband and in-laws began pressuring her for additional dowry soon after their marriage in March 2022.
The victim said that her father had already fulfilled their dowry demands, including purchasing land in her husband’s name. Despite this, the abuse allegedly continued, with the victim claiming she was locked in a room by her mother-in-law, leading her to file a domestic violence case in Kerala.
The situation escalated further on January 8, when the doctor visited her husband’s residence in Belonia, South Tripura, accompanied by her father, hoping to resolve their differences. Instead, she was allegedly verbally and physically assaulted by her husband, resulting in a broken hand and multiple injuries.
“When I visited him to talk and resolve things, he verbally abused me and my father. Later, he hit me with a belt and pushed my head against the wall, injuring me badly. He also asked us to leave, stating he did not know us,” the victim recounted.
The victim also alleged that Belonia police ignored her complaint and following intervention by the Tripura Women’s Commission, a zero FIR was registered at West Agartala police station on Saturday.
The victim has also written to Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chief Secretary, and Director General of Police, demanding justice.
