The protesting doctors and students even halted their work until 5 PM today as part of a broader protest.
In a show of solidarity with the victim of the alleged rape and murder at Radha Gobinda Kar Medical College in Kolkata, students and doctors of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GB Pant Hospital today staged a protest.
Protesters put forward 3 demands– Fast implementation of central policies aimed at preventing such heinous crimes in the future, transparent investigation into the matter and resignation of the official involved in the case.
The doctors and students staged protests within their respective hospital premises carrying banners and placards emblazoned with notes such as “Justice Denied, Justice Delayed,” “We Want Justice,” and “Don’t Want to Be the Next Victim.”
The protesting doctors and students even stopped their work until 5 PM today as part of a broader protest. The protest also saw undergraduate students boycotting their classes for the day to support the cause.
However, emergency and outpatient services continue to be available to ensure that critical care and urgent medical needs are met.
Speaking to media persons, a doctor said, ” We are protesting in response to the tragic death of a 31-year-old second-year postgraduate student at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9, 2024. We strongly condemn the incident and want our demands to be fulfilled soon.”
The body of a post-graduate trainee was found on Friday morning. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the case on Saturday.
The incident has sparked outrage across the medical community and nationwide protests are underway.
Doctors across the country have refused to return to work, except for emergency procedures.
Amid the growing nationwide outrage, the Calcutta High Court today ordered a CBI probe into the case and asked the police to hand over all the documents related to the case to the central probe agency immediately.
