The Agartala-Akhaura rail link, operational through Nischintapur rail station, will enable Agartala to be connected by an international rail link by December this year

In a big boost to rail and air connectivity, international flights from Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala will operate to Chittagong in Bangladesh soon, and Agartala rail station will connect to Akhaura rail station in the neighbouring nation by December this year, Tripura’s Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced on Thursday.

This development marks a significant step forward, as MBB Airport was already listed in the Gazette of India in April as an airport with customs center facilities.

Quoting Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury revealed that, in addition to customs facilities, the proposal for setting up an immigration facility at MBB Airport is currently under consideration by the Ministry of Home Affairs with the support of the state government. Once this facility is established, Spice Jet plans to operate flights on the said route.

To support this initiative, the state government has already provided Rs 3.75 crore out of the total annual gap fund of Rs 15 crore to Spice Jet for running flights between Agartala’s MBB Airport and Chittagong Airport in Bangladesh.

In this regard, a high-level crucial meeting was held at the secretariat under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday to address the provision of security personnel required for the necessary immigration center, as demanded by the Ministry of Home Affairs to the state government.

Additionally, Minister Chowdhury mentioned that the General Manager of NEF (North East Frontier) Railways, during his visit to the state three days ago, confirmed that the work on the Agartala-Akhaura rail link, connecting Tripura’s capital with Bangladesh, is expected to be completed by October.

The Agartala-Akhaura rail link, operational through Nischintapur rail station, will enable Agartala to be connected by an international rail link by December this year.

The Minister emphasized that this connectivity not only improves rail connections with the neighbouring nation but also opens up significant business opportunities for the state’s youth.
