Festive mood in Tripura, BJP will win hands-down, TIPRA Motha will be a factor: Assam CM on Tripura Polls

NEDA convenor and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma writes off Cong-CPI-M as a political factor, says not BJP’s ideology to support anyone who would divide Tripura

As the countdown for Tripura polls begins, NEDA convenor and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in Agartala today that BJP is all set to register a massive win in the upcoming Tripura Assembly elections and improve its 2018 numbers.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live in Agartala, the CM said, “the mood is festive. BJP will win hands down. We will improve than last year”.

Asked if TIPRA Motha, an indigenous regional party of Tripura would act as a factor in the coming polls, one of BJP’s topmost poll strategists in the northeast, CM Sarma said, “They are contesting, they will be a factor but I don’t think electorally they will gain that much”.

Responding to TIPRA Motha looking for an alliance with the BJP, the BJP leader who has proved his mettle as an astute statesman and a politician said, “We always want to have ties with tribal parties but at the same time we have to protect the integrity of Tripura. We cannot agree that Tripura will be divided into two states. That we cannot agree. We always wanted to empower the tribal community but at the same time we cannot disturb the unity and integrity of Tripura. That is our ideology, we cannot promote anyone who tries to divide Tripura.”

Asked who would be the main opponent of BJP in Tripura, he said, “It will depend on constituency wise but across the state we do not have any opponent. Seat-wise there will be opponents”.

Regarding the impact of Congress and CPI-M, the NEDA convenor said, “Congress today does represent the political landscape of the nation. CPI-M is not there at all. What will happen in the Left unity, how they will react, it has no significance for BJP because they are not all a relevant political factor.”

CM Sarma accompanied Tripura CM Manik Saha for the filling of nominations of CM Saha today the last day for filling the papers for the polls to be held on February 16. Results will be declared on March 2.
