Eng to be Second Language for Tiprasa Students: Decision After Tripra Accord Talks Round 2
First Published: 3rd December, 2024 21:29 IST
The next round of discussions on the Tiprasa Accord is scheduled for the last week of January 2025
The second round of discussions on the Tiprasa Accord concluded today with significant progress as consensus was achieved on two critical issues, according to top sources from Tipra Motha.
The meeting, held in the presence of MHA Special Advisor for Northeast A.K. Mishra, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma, Tripura Home Secretary, and other key stakeholders, resulted in an agreement to allow English as an alternative language for Tiprasa students in competitive examinations. Bengali will no longer be mandatory, marking a pivotal step towards accommodating the linguistic preferences of the Tiprasa community.
Another major development was the agreement to elevate the TTAADC (Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council) to a status comparable to other autonomous councils in the region, such as the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). This includes granting the council enhanced land regulation rights. Currently, the Tripura Land Regulation Act of 1960 overlaps with the Sixth Schedule, which limits the TTAADC’s jurisdiction over land regulations in its areas.
Tipra Motha sources emphasized the importance of these decisions in addressing the longstanding demands of the Tiprasa people. The next round of discussions on the Tiprasa Accord is scheduled for the last week of January, where further progress is anticipated.
The meeting was also attended by Tipra Motha chief Bijoy Kumar Wrangkhawl, reflecting the collective commitment to resolving the issues impacting the region.
The historic Tiprasa Accord for the protection of land, economic and constitutional rights of the Tiprasa people of Tripura was signed in March 2, 2024.
The first meeting of the Joint Working Group for the proper implementation of the Accord was held in New Delhi on September 20, 2024.
During the first meeting, a decision was taken to form a Joint Working Group that will meet every two months to ensure structured discussions. The group aims to create a comprehensive framework to address the longstanding concerns of the Tiprasa people, who have faced challenges for over seven decades. The Tipra Motha leaders submitted a detailed memorandum to the Convenor of the Joint
Working Group, AK Mishra.
