The crackdown on infiltration from Bangladesh to India through Tripura has intensified with nearly 20 arrests made in a span of 1 week. In the latest case, 8 Bangladeshi nationals who had entered India without valid documents were apprehended at the Agartala railway station today.
A local tout who was facilitating the movement of the illegal migrants was also arrested in a joint operation carried out by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Inspector Tapas Das, overseeing the GRP station, speaking to Northeast Live disclosed that based on confidential information, surveillance was heightened at the station, leading to the interception of nine suspects, seven of whom were women.
Upon interrogation, eight individuals said they are from Bangladesh, while one confessed to being an Indian who facilitated their train journey post-border crossing.
A case has been filed against the detainees under the Foreigner’s Act, IPC, and Indian Passport Act, with ongoing investigations to ascertain their entry point and accomplices.
Preliminary probe reveals that their intention was to seek employment as daily labourers in Mumbai and Pune.
Last Saturday, eight Bangladeshi nationals were arrested and their three children detained in Tripura’s Dhalai district.
According to reports, as many as 1,018 people were arrested in different parts of Tripura while illegally crossing the border between January 2023 and last month. They include 498 Bangladeshi citizens, 396 Indian nationals and 124 Rohingya people.
