CPI(M) Slams Tripura Govt for Rs 7 crore expenditure on Tripura Tourism Promo Fest, Govt Says, Claims “Balesess”

Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury dismissed the allegations as “baseless, misleading, and reprehensible.”
The CPI(M) has criticized the BJP-led Tripura government over alleged extravagant spending on the grand finale of the Tripura Tourism Promo Fest 2024, which featured a live musical concert by Bollywood singer Shreya Ghoshal at Swami Vivekananda Stadium in Agartala on December 15.
Former Chief Minister and veteran CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar, speaking at a public gathering in Agartala Town Hall on Friday, accused the government of squandering approximately Rs 7 crore of public money on one-night.
He criticized the administration for extravagant spending during festivals and on posters and flexes featuring the Chief Minister and ministers, which he alleged had cost the exchequer a huge amount.
The event, he said, represented an unnecessary use of taxpayer funds, particularly when there are pressing issues in the state that require urgent attention.
Reacting sharply to Sarkar’s claims, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury dismissed the allegations as “baseless, misleading, and reprehensible.”
While Chowdhury admitted he could not provide the exact expenditure without an official audit, he refuted Sarkar’s claim of Rs 7 crore, stating that the total cost of the event was around Rs 1.5 crore, far less than what the former Chief Minister alleged.
“Manik Sarkar’s claim of Rs 7 crore expenditure is baseless. The actual expenditure would barely be Rs. 1.5 crore. Such baseless statements do not suit a former Chief Minister, ” said the Minister.
Minister Chowdhury said that the Promo Fest-2024 had in fact significantly boosted Tripura’s tourism sector.
Chowdhury accused the Left Front government of failing to promote tourism during its tenure and misleading people with false information. He also said that Sarkar’s claims does not matter and public will thank the government for promoting tourism 20 years later.
