As demand for NRC-like exercise in the Northeast grow louder, Assam Public Work is preparing to file a petition in the Supreme Court to initiate an NRC-like exercise in other Northeastern States.

APW president Abhijeet Sharma speaking at Northeast Tonight hosted by Editor-in-Chief Wasbir Hussain said that his organisation is making arrangements to move the Supreme Court for initiation of NRC-like exercise in other states of the Northeast and also in West Bengal.

The call for NRC in Tripura is growing stronger day by day. After an attempt by the little known Tripura People’s Front at the Supreme Court to introduce NRC in the state, Congress party leader Pradyut Debbarman stated that he would be filing a writ petition by next week to push for the introduction of NRC in Tripura.

While talking with Northeast Live editor-in-chief Wasbir Hussain on the show Northeast Tonight, Debbarman said Tripura is a border state with a serious problem of illegal influx.

Meanwhile, Debbarman said that while such a step would lead to problems for many people, it will be in the interest of the state of Tripura which has long been plagued by the issue illegal immigration.

Earlier, on Monday the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the Centre and the Election Commission of India on a plea seeking updation of NRC in Tripura.
