CAA in Tripura soon: Opposition questions TIPRA Motha’s alleged silence, Royal scion Pradyot responds

TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot said that the TIPRA Motha certain things need to be examined and said that it is not at all happy with the present system of the

Hours after Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha asserted that the CAA will indeed be implemented in the state, the Opposition has taken potshots at the TIPRA Motha- BJP’s alliance partner, for allegedly keeping mum on the issue, despite the fact that it had opposed the contentious act tooth and nail, before becoming part of the government.

However, setting aside the allegation levelled by the Opposition, TIPRA Motha chief and Royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said that he and his party are still awaiting clarity from the government on certain aspects of implementing CAA. Pradyot said that certain things need to be examined and said that it is not at all happy with the present system of the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live over the phone, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said, “I am aware that the GoI has started the process of implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act. While the whole of Northeast, especially the 6th Schedule Areas including in Tripura, have been exempted, I am still concerned about the checks and balances of people who will be included in this Act. My case in the Supreme Court is still pending and we would like to be even clearer that on what grounds and what will be the mechanism to check, if the migrant has illegally entered our country, did he enter before 2014, what are the records, because somebody may come in today, in 2019, in 2023 and claim so so. We would like to know under what process, what are the documentations that should be given, where will the person stay, will he or she stay in the 6th Schedule Areas or outside the 6th Schedule Areas. All these things have to be examined and only after that we will be satisfied.

The stance of TIPRA Motha and mine is very clear, we do not agree with the present system of the Citizenship Amendment Act. While we may be an alliance partner with the BJP, our line is very clear. We do not agree on demographic change of states in Northeast, because our indigenous population is very small. And if we do not have a proper system, then many people can come and say that they have been here for years. Who will check, who will verify these documents, these papers, there should be transparency and these are legitimate concerns and they have to be addressed.”

Prior to that, launching a scathing attack on TIPRA Motha, Tripura Opposition leader and CPI-M state secretary Jitendra Choudhury said, “TIPRA Motha has emerged out of a hoax. Actually they do not have any agenda, any vision or any real pro-people commitment. Only to grab the power and by playing some sort of hide and seek games, stealing the sentiments of the very humble Tiprasa population for last 3 years, they tried to spoil the political culture of the state. Now against which party-the BJP, they (TIPRA Motha) talked so high, so loud on so many things, but now they (TIPRA Motha) have entered their (BJP) court, so they will be now speechless, voiceless, aimless. By themselves, they (TIPRA Motha) is declaring it’s own end.”

Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman also hit out at the TIPRA Motha and accused Royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma of selling himself to the BJP.

“The demography will change (if CAA comes). The ratio in which presently the indigenous people are is going to change, those people are going to have an impact on our GDP. We are not in that position, our people those who are the sons of the soil, we are unable to give a share of the GDP to them. And you are inviting further more people, those who are basically foreigners. TIPRA Motha is keeping quite because the supremo who happens to be a money monger, he has been asked to shut his mouth, because of these wrongdoings which are going to happen. But I believe all the legislators and leaders of TIPRA Motha, they are not going to echo the voice of the TIPRA Motha supremo, who is being completely purchased and who has sold himself out to the BJP,” Sudip Roy Barman said.
