BJP chooses Dr Manik Saha as new Chief Minister of Tripura

Biplab Kumar Deb submitted his resignation from the post of Chief Minister to Governor Satyadeo Narayan Arya.

In a big development after outgoing chief minister of Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb’s resignation, Dr Manik Saha has been chosen as the new chief minister of the state.

Dr Saha is a Rajya Sabha MP and state BJP president from Tripura.

Meanwhile, names of Union Minister Pratima Bhowmick, Education minister Ratan Nath, and Speaker Ratan Chakraborty were being discussed but Dr Manik Saha emerged as the front runner for the CM’s post with most of the legislators in favour of Saha, sources said.

Senior BJP leaders Bhupender Yadav and Vinod Tawde, who are already in Tripura, were appointed as observers for the election of the legislature party leader.

Besides them, the party’s state in-charge Vinod Sonkar also attended the meeting.

Earlier in the day, Biplab Kumar Deb submitted his resignation from the post of Chief Minister to Governor Satyadeo Narayan Arya.

Speaking to the media, after his resignation Deb said, “The party may have some plans and I am confident that it will be good for the party.”

“I have tried to bring justice to the state. This decision has been made keeping in view the 2023 election so that the party can win and for the interest of the organisation,” he added.

Biplab Deb became the first BJP Chief Minister in the state in 2018, ending the 25-year-rule of the Communist Party of India.

It is also learned that internal party matter led to Biplab Kumar Deb stepping down as the Tripura party leaders were not happy with the functioning style of Deb and had been continuously apprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah since last eight months.

They apprised the high command that the BJP party cannot afford to go ahead for 2023 polls in the state with Deb as CM candidate.
