Amid deteriorating conditions in Bangladesh following anti-quota protests, Indian students studying there have started returning home.

Four MBBS students from Brahmanbaria Medical College and Hospital crossed into Tripura via the Agartala Integrated Check Post today. Three of them are from Assam, and one is from Meghalaya.

The students said that they received assistance from the Indian Embassy in Dhaka to facilitate their return.

As the situation escalates, the Indian High Commission and Bangladesh police are in constant contact with the Indian students.

The returnees cited panic following the shutdown of internet connectivity and the closure of their medical college.

Currently, approximately 70-80 Indian students from various states, including Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Haryana, are enrolled at Brahmanbaria Medical College and are waiting to return home due to the turmoil.

Indian students are also returning via Tripura’s Srimantapur border in Sepahijala district, opposite Comilla in Bangladesh.

As of now, around 778 Indian students have safely returned to India through different land ports. Furthermore, approximately 200 students have flown back home via regular flight services using Dhaka and Chittagong airports, as per a statement from the MEA.

The High Commission has been maintaining regular communication with over 4,000 students who are still enrolled in various universities across Bangladesh. Additionally, upon request, assistance has been extended to students from Nepal and Bhutan to cross into India.

It may be mentioned here that at least 105 people have died in clashes between student protestors and police in Bangladesh, according to AFP’s tally from hospital reports.

The Sheikh Hasina government has recently imposed a nationwide curfew and deployed military forces to restore order.

Fresh curfew was announced late last night by Obaidul Auader, General Secretary of the ruling Awami League party, who stated it was necessary to assist civilian authorities in maintaining stability.

This decision followed hours of police firing bullets and using tear gas against protestors, along with a ban on gatherings in Dhaka.

Yesterday, demonstrators raided a jail in Narsingdi district, freeing hundreds of inmates before setting the facility ablaze. Officials estimate that hundreds of prisoners managed to escape.
