South Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship gets underway in Arunachal Pradesh; players from 6 nations take part

Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju inaugurated the mega sporting event in which players from 6 countries - Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and India are participating.

The South Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship 2023 got underway in Arunachal Pradesh’s capital Itanagar today.

Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju inaugurated the mega sporting event in which
players from 6 countries – Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and India are participating. The championship that is taking place at the Dorjee Khandu badminton hall will conclude on May 17.

Minister Rijiju, addressing the players as well as officials, hoped that in the coming years table tennis players from Arunachal Pradesh too will make it to the national as well as international level.

The union minister also tweeted, “Huge moment in the sporting history of Arunachal Pradesh as all the best young talents compete at the South Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship 2023 at Itanagar. My best wishes to all the players in the tournament!”

Kiren Rijiju further stated that the South Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship 2023 will promote sports and friendship amongst the South Asian nations.

“Table Tennis is fast becoming hugely popular in India as all our players are performing brilliantly at international events. The South Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship has begun with colorful display at Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh,”he added.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also believes that the event will be a huge learning experience for the budding players as they will get to know how the game is played at the international level.

Taking to Twitter Chief Minister Khandu said,”As the four-day international event – South Asian Youth Table Tennis Championships 2023 – has begun in Itanagar today, I welcome all the participants and delegates to our beautiful Arunachal Pradesh.
This mega event, inaugurated in presence of Union Law Min Shri @KirenRijiju Ji and Chief Secretary Shri Dharmendra Ji, is also an opportunity for our budding Table Tennis players to have a look at the kind of game, matches the international players play.
My best wishes to the TT stars. Give your best and play smashing shots.”

The championship will feature U19 Boys and Girls teams, U15 Boys and Girls teams, U19 Boys and Girls singles, U15 Boys and Girls singles, U19 Boys and Girls doubles, and U19 & U15 Mixed doubles events. The singles and doubles competitions will follow the New Swaythling Cup system format.
