Who is Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, the lone winner of SDF in Sikkim Assembly Election 2024?

He won the seat with 6633 votes defeating SKM's Kunga Nima Lepcha, BJP's Pempo Dorjee Lepcha, Citizen Action Party (CAP's) Sonam Tshering Lepcha

It was nothing less than a SKM tsunami as the party led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang swept across the state winning 31 of the 32 Assembly seats trouncing the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), a party that governed the state for 25 years in a row, almost without a trace but for a lone SDF candidate who managed to win one seat.

Interestingly enough, Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, the lone SDF candidate to win a seat, is a former SKM leader. He won the Syari Assembly seat amid the SKM wave.

Results for the 32-member Sikkim Assembly was announced today.

Who is Tenzing Norbu Lamtha?

In an election where the party’s top leaders, including the longest-serving former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, failed to secure even a single seat, Lamtha’s victory stands out as a remarkable success for the SDF.

He won the seat with 6633 votes defeating SKM’s Kunga Nima Lepcha, BJP’s Pempo Dorjee Lepcha, Citizen Action Party (CAP’s) Sonam Tshering Lepcha and Karma Tashi Bhutia of Congress.

Despite the overwhelming SKM wave, his ability to connect with constituents and address their concerns likely played a key role in his victory.

Tenzing Norbu Lamtha was the former Vice President of the SKM Panchayat Cell and Advisor to the Information and Technology Department of the Government of Sikkim.

He resigned from the SKM party and joined SDF in March this year.
