A total of 128 students from Sikkim were evacuated from violence-torn Manipur on Sunday. The students were brought back on special flights arranged by the state government from Imphal.
The students landed in Kolkata and were enroute to Siliguri by bus.
“The state government has arranged SNT buses for their transit to the state upon their arrival in Siliguri today,” the government release stated.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang launched ‘Operation Gurans, an initiative of the state government to bring back students to Sikkim, spearheaded by Chief Secretary V.B. Pathak.
“The Chief Minister constantly monitored the situation in Manipur and took stock of every aspect of security and other issues affecting the students,” the government release further stated.
Meanwhile, the state government took care of all the necessary requirements for the students during their transit.
“Simultaneously, the Information and Public Relations Department, Government of Sikkim, led by Secretary, Ms. Namrata Thapa, IAS, played a significant role in providing essential information to the masses since the inception of the emergency meeting held at Tashiling Secretariat,” the release stated.
The Sikkim government also launched a helpline service number (03592 299959) from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 pm, set up at the Emergency Response Support System located at Tashiling Secretariat, which had a dedicated team in charge of addressing any calls of distress from the students of Sikkim in Manipur.
