Sikkim: Woman Commits Suicide in Gyalsing, 19th Case in 11 Days

First Published: 20th February, 2025 9:38 IST

The deceased woman has been identified as Tika Maya Chettri (22).

Another case of suicide has been reported from Sikkim. With this, the state has reported as many as 19 suicide cases in the last 10 days.

The latest incident has been reported from Mangnam village in Gyalsing district, where a woman identified as Tika Maya Chettri (22) was found hanging from a tree near her house on Wednesday.

According to police, her husband had returned home after attending a death ritual in the village, only to find his wife missing and their children crying. Upon searching the area, he found her body hanging from a tree with a rope. He then informed the police.

The same day, a 75-year-old man also committed suicide at
Turuk village under Namchi district.

This rising number of suicide cases in the Himalayan State raises serious concerns about mental health, social pressures, and financial distress.

The victims, from different age groups and backgrounds, included students, working professionals, and elderly individuals.

While investigations are underway, preliminary findings indicate that depression, financial struggles, family problems, and social isolation may have played significant roles in these deaths.

Mental health professionals have pointed out multiple underlying reasons that could be contributing to the rise in suicides:

1.Depression and anxiety : Many victims were reportedly struggling with mental health issues but lacked access to psychological support and counselling.
Academic pressure: The suicide of a Class X student before board exams underscores the immense stress students face, raising concerns about the need for mental health awareness in schools.
Financial distress: Some victims, including small business owners and daily wage earners, were reportedly facing severe economic pressure, leading to despair.
Family and relationship issues: A few victims were living alone, dealing with marital separation, or experiencing personal conflicts that may have led to their decision.
Substance abuse: Several cases involved individuals with a history of alcoholism, which might have worsened their emotional struggles.

What does the state Government have to say on the issue?

Earlier, speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Sikkim Health Minister GT Dhungel expressed deep concern over the rising suicide rates in the state. He attributed the growing crisis to factors such as stress, mental health issues, family disputes, and drug abuse.

Addressing the gravity of the situation, Minister Dhungel assured that the health department is actively working to tackle the issue. He said that he chaired a high-level meeting on Wednesday to discuss measures to address the mental health crisis and drug addiction in the state.

Furthermore, he stated that the department has made special arrangements for drug users, ensuring better rehabilitation and support systems.

The minister emphasised the need for a collective effort from society, families, and government agencies to curb the rising cases and promote mental well-being in Sikkim.
