Sikkim is all set to host the 6th Youth Men’s National Boxing Championship from June 13 to 18 in Gangtok. The boxing championship will be organized by the Sikkim Amateur Boxing Association, for which preparations have already begun.
As per the organisers, more than 600 players from 28 states and eight Union Territories are likely to participate in the tournament.
The players who win gold medals in the competition in 13 different categories will have the opportunity to play in the Youth Men’s Asian Boxing Championship to be held in Kazakhstan in July and play in the qualifying round of the 2024 Olympics.
Sikkim Amateur Boxing Association and Youth Men National Championship Organizing Committee Chairman, Jaslal Pradhan informed that 13 players from Sikkim are preparing for the tournament.
The Chairman said that the tournament, which will be played in the boxing ring located in the gym hall of Paljar Stadium, will be inaugurated by Chief Minister PS Tamang on June 13 and the finals will be held on June 18.
The President expressed that getting the opportunity to host this national tournament is a great achievement for the sports sector of Sikkim, including the Boxing Association.
Since a large number of players and a battery of referees will come to Sikkim, the organizers believe that the image of Sikkim in the field of sports will be established at the National and International levels.
Players in the age group of 17 to 19 will be participating in the tournament, in which 13 different categories between 48 and 91 kg will be played.
The organizing committee also informed that Most Promising Boxer, Overall Best Boxer, and Team Championship awards will also be given.
