In a move that would give a big boost to football in Sikkim, the All India Football Federation National Executive meeting held on Wednesday (Nov 16) decided to set up a Centre for Excellence for football and FIFA School in the state that has produced footballers like Baichung Bhutia, the famous former professional footballer of India.
Addressing the media, Kalyan Chaubey, President AIFF, informed that an agreement has been signed between FIFA and Government of India by HRDD to establish FIFA School in all the six districts of Sikkim. Chaubey also assured that AIFF would organise international football matches at the two certified football stadiums — the Bhaichung stadium and Paljor stadium.
The AIFF executive was accorded a grand welcome by Chief Minister PS Tamang. The CM welcomed the decisions and assured all the support and help.
Sikkim Football Association President Menla Ethenpa thanked AIFF President Chaubey for choosing Sikkim as the venue for the executive meet “because this is a shot in the arm”, Ethenpa said.
The executive committee also visited the Tashi Namgyal Academy ground where 300 new footballers are attending a coaching camp.
The AIFF executive committee also decided to provide a financial assistance of Rs 24 lakh to each state football association for all-round development of the sport.
“The financial assistance may be utilized by the state associations for their women’s, men’s and youth leagues, office spaces, equipment, and grassroots development,” AIFF said in its statement.
