Rai further accused the SKM of not fulfilling promises made to the panchayats before the last elections
Former Speaker of Sikkim Legislative Assembly and opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Kedar Nath Rai has alleged that the panchayat members faced huge disrespect when they were made to chant pro-SKM political slogans during the recent State Panchayat Sammelan.
Rai alleged that the three-day Sammelan was unproductive for the panchayats and held merely to ask for votes by the ruling SKM while wasting public money amounting to crores of rupees.
Speaking to media, Rai said, “The three-day panchayat sammelan had no productive outcome and its ending was a tragedy with the Chief Minister asking for votes from the panchayats. The sammelan should have deliberations on ways of empowering the panchayats as only by doing that we can develop our society at the grassroots level. Instead of that we saw the Rural Development minister shouting political slogans at the event.”
Rai further accused the SKM of not fulfilling promises made to the panchayats before the last elections and are repeating the trick of making empty promises this time around.
The State-level Panchayat Sammelan was held from January 23 to 25 with participation of zilla panchayats, ward panchayats and members of the local civic bodies. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang attended the second day of deliberations and addressed the gathering on the concluding day.
