Sikkim BJP President DR Thapa and MLA Narendra Kumar Subba on Friday called on Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi and discussed matters concerning Sikkim and defense-related issues.
The leaders emphasized the need for more job opportunities for Sikkimese youth in the Armed Forces and discussed ways to achieve this goal.
During the meeting, Thapa highlighted the fact that Sikkimese people, being indigenous Himalayan people, possess the necessary skills and expertise in the terrains and activities in which the Army functions, making them suitable candidates for defense services.
Thapa also stressed that creating more job opportunities for the youth in the armed forces would be a boon for the state, which is currently facing an unemployment crisis.
The leaders also discussed the possibility of offering more jobs to local youth on a contractual basis with GREF and BRO, which are always actively working in the state.
This move would utilize the capabilities of deserving youth and provide them with opportunities for employment.
The leaders further discussed the untapped tourism potential in the border regions of Sikkim, which could be harnessed to create job opportunities for local villagers.
They emphasized the need to uplift and bring these villages to the forefront as prime tourist destinations, thus modifying the tourism and employment model of the state.
