Sikkim avalanche update: Tourists from Nepal, UP and West Bengal among 7 dead, 13 injured

Three tourists from Nepal, two from Uttar Pradesh and two from West Bengal including a six year old girl child are among the dead who lost their lives after being hit by a massive avalanche yesterday morning in Sikkim.

The seven deceased tourists have been identified as:

The Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army and rescue team of Border Roads Organisation, GREF and SDRF Police had rescued 27 trapped tourists from underneath mounds of snow. Thirteen tourists who had sustained injuries, were treated at the nearby Army hospital and seven of them have been discharged after first aid. Six of them were admitted to the hospital for further treatment.

Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang visited the injured in the STNM Hospital in Gangtok and assured all help and assistance to all of them.

Governor Governer, Lakshman Prasad Acharaya too visited the injured and took an update about their health.

Tourism minister BS Panth visited the avalanche site today morning.

Rescue and snow clearing activity was resumed today at 8AM but so far till 2PM no bodies or any alive have been found.

Meanwhile, the Lachung Dzomsa (panchayat) has issued a travel advisory asking tourists and drivers not to go towards Yakchey area (Lachung range) in North Sikkim. The advisory was issued as there has been heavy snowfall in the higher reached of the Himalayas and there is possibility of avalanches.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had yesterday expressed grief and condoled the deaths in the tragic incident.
