The SDF party also demanded to revisit the merger of Sikkim with India in order to find the root of the issue
The situation in Sikkim is heating up after the Supreme Court’s verdict labelled the Sikkimese Nepalis as foreigners and immigrants.
Sikkim’s main opposition party, the Sikkim Democratic Front’s Chief spokesperson, M. K. Subba, speaking to Northeast Live, said there was a demand for a review petition after the 2013 petition. He urged the association of old settlers to make the amended petitions public.
Additional Advocate General, Sudesh Joshi in 2013 appeared before the SC where a petition was filed wherein the Nepali community was referred to as migrants.
“We request the association of old settlers make the review petition public. We also request that the government of Sikkim address this very sensitive issue immediately.”
“The Chief minister should hold a press conference to explain the government’s position, what it plans to do next, and how it intends to regain the trust of the people of Sikkim. Most importantly, Sikkim is a border-sensitive state, and emotions are running high in Sikkim right now. So he has to keep the law and order in place.”
The SDF party also demanded to revisit the merger of Sikkim with India in order to find the root of the issue.
“Now it’s time to revisit the merger.” Sikkim is a special state, but our assembly doesn’t enjoy full power. There are many restrictions still imposed in the assembly as we transition from the monarchy phase to democracy; the transition phase is still going on. “Due to that, a lot of damage has been done.” M. K. Subba said.
Meanwhile, speaking on Additional Advocate General Sudesh Joshi’s resignation, the SDF party accused Joshi of creating a drama and said that he resigned after ruining everything.
The party also announced that the Save Sikkim programme will also go forward with this matter. The SDF party will continue with the programme as it also matches the issues of the Supreme Court verdict.
