The public and Pipon (village headman) of Lachen Dzumsa have expressed their dismay over the Sikkim government’s apathy even after three months of the devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Floods at South Lhonak Lake that caused widespread destruction.

In a letter to the Chief Secretary, the office of the pipon of Lachen Dzumsa (traditional administrative institution of villages in Sikkim) stated that since the disaster, the situation of Lachen has deteriorated even more and remains cut off from the rest of the world in several locations.

Pointing out several issues, the office stated of Pipon said that the road construction from Chungthang to Lachen is going on at a snail’s pace and that the General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) BRO has limited advanced machineries and skilled labours.

The office reminded the GREF of its assurance to complete the roads from Chungthang to Lachen before 31 March 2023.

The office also noted that the road construction at Zeema Chu is unfit for vehicles.

Furthermore, the office also stated that the state govt has not surveyed private holding lands washed away by the flash floods, and urged the govt to allot resettlement for people at govt lands above Chutachu near Lachen.

The govt has also been urged to grant incentives for affected business owners and service providers.
The office also appealed the animal husbandry department to provide animal feeds to Lachen since most pasturelands have been washed away.

The office further stated that people’s resentment continues to rise and if the government does not take any action, they will march to Gangtok with black flags.
