Ahead of BJP National President J.P. Nadda’s visit to Sikkim, Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) President Bhaichung Bhutia wrote a letter to the BJP National President regarding the reversal of clauses (iv) and (v) to the explanation under sub-section 26AAA of Section 10 of the Income Tax Act, 1961, which has been introduced in the Finance Act 2023.
The Finance Act 2023 introduced by the BJP-led central government, has triggered widespread concerns among the people of Sikkim.
“The Act dilutes the “Sikkimese” definition and weakens the protection afforded by Article 371F, which safeguards the distinct identity and interests of the three ethnic communities in Sikkim: the Lepcha of Sikkimese origin, Bhutia of Sikkimese origin, and Nepali of Sikkimese origin,” a press release from HSP stated.
In the letter addressed to J. P. Nadda, Bhaichung Bhutia highlighted the contradiction between the resolution passed in the Sikkim assembly, which acknowledges the dilution of the Sikkimese definition, and the claims made by the Chief Minister during his visits to the central government. Hamro Sikkim Party emphasised that it was the BJP-led central government that introduced the Finance Bill 2023, which led to the dilution of Sikkimese definitin, and therefore holds the responsibility to rectify this matter.
“Hamro Sikkim Party believes that preserving the essence of the Sikkimese identity is of utmost importance. It calls upon all stakeholders, including the central government, to act swiftly and rectify the dilution of the “Sikkimese” definition and Article 371F to ensure the protection and welfare of the Sikkimese people,” the press release added.
