Former SDF Minister and leader of the Gurung Community, GM Gurung, reacting to Padam Gurung’s death case, asserted that the death of Padam Gurung was not natural.

Gurung claimed that a drain of about 1.5 feet could not drown anyone to death.

He said that the people involved in the death of Late Padam Gurung should be punished and that the police department should work on this matter as soon as possible.

Gurung also expressed that the Gurung Community is affected by the death of Padam Gurung.
He showed full faith in the Sikkim Police to solve the case.

He also said that he will have a talk with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and will request the CM to inquire the matter.

On Saturday, the student wing of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has demanded a CBI inquiry into the death case of student leader Padam Gurung alleging that there is no transparency or clarity in the ongoing investigation.

The Student Front further alleged that the College Administration has failed to take action despite having an anti-ragging committee and added that the Anti-Ragging Act 2001 be invoked.

The Front also questioned the Police Department for not sealing the location where the dead body was found, adding that any evidence could have been tampered with.

Furthermore, the Student Front dismissed the possibility that Padam Gurung could have accidentally fallen into the drain, stating that it was too narrow for an accidental fall.

Earlier, in a new development in the Padam Gurung’s death case, an audio clip had gone viral where Padam Gurung’s brother is heard speaking over the phone with a girl who claims to be an eyewitness to the entire incident and is narrating the incident, which unfolded on the fateful night of June 26.

The girl claimed that she and a few of her friends were with Padam Gurung on the night of June 26.

The girl also claimed that the owner of the restaurant hit Padam with a blow, following which Padam fell unconscious.

The police reacting to the viral audio clip said that the audio clip relates to another incident which happened on the same night and in front of the same restaurant.

“According to this new information, the deceased person and another individual were seen going downwards, presumably in search of their vehicle keys. The statements provided by witnesses have been compared with the CCTV footages and found to be inconsistent. Based on the information provided, it is clarified that there has been confusion initially regarding the incident being discussed in the viral audio,” Sikkim police said in a press note.

The government has set up a special committee to investigate the death of the student leader.

Padam Gurung, President of the Students Representative Council of Namchi Government College, was found dead on June 28 in the Kazitar area of Namchi, Sikkim.

According to sources, Gurung was untraceable since June 27 night after he was reportedly washed away following heavy rainfall. His body was recovered from a drain the next morning.
