To further improve connectivity in the state, Shrivastava said that railways will start in Sikkim next year

In a step to boost the tourism sector in the state, the Sikkim Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has proposed the opening of six heliports in each of the six districts of the state.

M. L. Shrivastava, Additional Chief Secretary in Charge of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, highlighted that tourism and civil aviation are the main livelihoods of Sikkim.

Sikkim has over 16–17 helipads, but the helipads are not enough to meet the requirements of the tourists, he said.

Thus, proper heliports are necessary to ease the travel needs of tourists coming to the state.

To further improve connectivity in the state, Shrivastava said that railways will start in Sikkim next year.

He added that the SpiceJet flight connecting Pakyong and Kolkata, which was closed in October, is set to resume from September 5. At present, the flight connecting Delhi and Pakyong is operational.

Further, he said that talks are going on with the government to increase the number of airlines in the state, apart from SpiceJet.

A skywalk project at Bhaleydhunga, Yangang, has also been sanctioned, which will be funded from the PM DevINE Fund, adding more to the tourism sector.

The transport department is also working to address the issue of overcharging by taxi drivers by bringing in payments through QR codes to maintain a fixed rate for travellers.
