Assembly Polls 2024: Sikkim CM PS Tamang files nomination for Soreng-Chakung seat

Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang (also known as PS Goley) filed his nomination papers today for the Soreng-Chakung seat. The seat is currently held by his son Aditya Tamang who won the seat in 2019 Assembly elections with 6,580 votes.

SKM chief PS Tamang will also be contesting from Rhenock seat. He is the sitting MLA of Poklok-Kamrang that he won in 2019 bypoll.

This is the first time Tamang will be contesting from Rhenock. He has won the Soreng-Chakung seat thrice earlier in 1994, 1999 and 2004. The seat was known as Chakung then.

The Chief Minister who ousted 5-time Sikkim CM, Pawan Chamling in the 2019 Assembly elections, was seen surrounded by a sea of supporters as he filed his papers hoping for another term in office.
CM Tamang will file the nomination for Rhenock seat tomorrow. Sikkim goes to polls on April 19 for the 32-member Assembly. Counting of votes will be on June 2.

Who is PS Tamang? All you need to know

CM Tamang is the 6th Chief Minister of Sikkim. A teacher-turned-politician, Tamang is a former SDF leader and a 6-time MLA. He turned a rebel after the Rolu picnic incident of 2009 when the SDF government had issued a show cause notice to the government employees who had gone for the picnic.
In 2013 he resigned from SDF, formed Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) on February 4, 2013 in Soreng, West Sikkim and became its President. In the 2014 Sikkim Assembly polls, SKM won 10 of the 32 Assembly seats. In 2019, Tamang usurped the CM’s chair from Pawan Chamling by winning 17 seats.

Political Career: PS Tamang won the Chakung seat thrice – 1994, 1999 and 2004 as SDF candidate. He won the Upper Burtuk seat in 2009 on SDF ticket and in 2014 he won the Upper Burtuk and the Namthang-Rateypani seats as SKM leader. He won the Poklok-Kamrang seat in the 2019 by-election.

• In 2019, Tamang won the Poklok-Kamrang in the by-election with 10,811 votes on SKM ticket.
• In 2014, he won the Upper Burtuk seat with a total of 5272 votes on SKM ticket.
• In 2009, he won the Upper Burtuk seat with a total of 5,908 votes on SDF ticket.
• In 2004, he won the Chakung seat with a total of 6702 votes on SDF ticket.
• In 1999, he won the Chakung seat with a total 3572 votes on SDF ticket.
• In 1994, he won the Chakung seat with 3372 votes on SDF ticket.

In 1990, he was appointed a graduate teacher under the HRD Department in the Government of Sikkim and served until 1993.

He served in ministerial roles in the Sikkim government for three consecutive terms.

• From 1994 to 1999 he served as the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Ecclesiastical and Industry Department.
• From 1999 to 2004 he served as the Minister for Industries and Animal Husbandry.
• From 2004 to 2009 he served as the Minister for Building and Housing Department.

Early Life:
Tamang was born on 5 February 1968 in the Indian Gorkha family of Kalu Singh Tamang and Dhan Maya Tamang.He hails from Singling Busty, West Sikkim. He graduated with a degree in Bachelors of Arts from Darjeeling Government College in 1988. After graduation, he worked as a teacher in a state-run school. He is married to Krishna Rai. She would be contesting from the Namchi-Shinghithang seat, a SDF bastion that SDF supremo Pawan Chamling has thrice in 2009, 2014 and 2019. This time Chamling is contesting from Poklok Kamrang. SDF has fielded Bimal Rai from the Namchi-Shinghithang seat.
