With the sudden surge in African swine fever cases in Sikkim, the Department of Animal Husbandry has imposed strict regulations to control the infection in the state.
Sikkim has recorded multiple cases of African swine fever from various locations in Gangtok, Pakyong, Mangan and Namchi Districts.
Although the disease does not infect humans or other livestock species, ASF is a highly contagious and fatal for domestic and feral pigs. The infection is transmitted through direct and indirect contacts, ingestion of contaminated feed and by certain tick vector species.
A detailed Standard Operating Procedure for African swine fever is expected to be issued by the department soon. It needs to be mentioned here that over 30 thousand pigs have been culled in Mizoram since December last year due to the outbreak of African swine fever.
