Bharatiya Janata Party in Sikkim has demanded death penalty for criminal Pritam Sharma of Bihar who was arrested for raping and killing an 11-year-old girl in Gangtok.
Demanding the state government to accelerate the judicial process against him, BJP said that the case should not settle for anything less than death penalty which is the minimum justice to the victim and her family.
“Our society will not accept a punishment less than this for a person with such monstrous tendencies. BJP Sikkim stands in solidarity with victim’s family in ensuring justice and extends its prayers for the departed soul,” said BJP in a statement.
BJP also alleged the state government of failing to control the rising crime against women in the state which has become a matter of dire concern.
Furthermore, BJP has requested the state government and law enforcement agencies to take effective steps and the civil society to be vigilant and alert of such issues.
A massive rally was also carried out by angry public on April 19 from Amdo Golai to Byepass in the capital city of Gangtok demanding death penalty for the accused.
It may be mentioned here on April 14, the body of the minor girl who was missing since April 11 was found. 29-year-old Pritam Sharma, a permanent resident of Bihar sexually assaulted her and then out of fear of her filing a complaint, he strangled her with her school tie and killed her, said Akshay Sachdeva, ADGP, Law and Order.
Sharma did not know the child from before. He was driving along the road when he spotted her. He offered her a lift and the unsuspecting child got into the car. After which Sharma told the child that he will drive to the petrol pump (gas station) to fill up the tank and then go for a drive. He later lured the child saying he will treat her to some snacks and beverages and bought some juices and toffees for her. He then took her to Fambonglho Jungle at Pangthang and committed the crime.
The accused has been booked for murder under IPC 302.
