The Sasoni Merbeel wetland, with all its biodiversity, is all set to become the next eco-tourism attraction of the Northeast.
Spread over 1550 bighas in Assam’s Naharkatia it is also known as the island of silence for its cool and calm environs.
It is also a place where Monimanik Gogoi, an ex ULFA member is moving ahead from his violent past. For ten years Gogoi has tried to develop an eco-tourism project revolving around the wetland.
His efforts are not only slowly making it one of the tourism hotspots of upper Assam but it’s also generating employment for the locals as well.
Every year in winter, the wetland attracts a large number of migratory birds, making it an ideal spot for birdwatchers to visit this time of the year.
Earlier hidden by obscurity tourists are now seen visiting the Sasoni Merbeel to experience the rich flora and fauna of the area. Like other tourism hotspots, the fledgling tourist locale was had to lose visitors to Cocvid-19 lockdowns.
With the gradual lifting of Covid lockdown, it is slowly coming alive with a steady stream of visitors after it reopened on September 2, 2021.
It may be mentioned that while the tourism project is yet to formally take off, the committee has already built a few cottages at the site with the help of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation.
The project has also received funding of over Rs 1 crore from Oil India Limited.
Gogoi asserted that the mysterious natural and priceless natural wealth have combined to make this Island one of the state’s most cherished tourist destinations.
He further stated the tourist spot has also four cottages for night stay in which eight families can stay but the cottages are not started yet.
