Reservation policy review won’t resolve unemployment issue: Meghalaya Min Paul Lyngdoh

The minister said that the govt should look at sectors like tourism, weaving, village tourism, areas which have a high job generation potential

Amid the row surrounding the review of the reservation policy, Meghalaya cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh today made a big statement on the issue. Lyngdoh said that reviewing the reservation policy will not in any way resolve the unemployment crisis.

When asked by newspersons if the review of the reservation policy is a solution to unemployment, the Meghalaya cabinet minister mentioned, “It will never. There are 500 vacancies available with the government, in government undertakings in a year. This is a dwindling sector in terms of employment.”

Without naming anyone, the minister said he feels that the sense of priorities is totally wrong. According to him the real issues have been overlooked.

Paul Lyngdoh stated, “We should talk more about sectors like tourism, weaving, village tourism, about government aided projects. There are lots of opportunities. I feel that our sense of priorities is very wrong. Our real issues are drug addiction, single mother families, child malnourishment, infant mortality rate, landlessness. These are the issues that concern us.”

On May 31, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had said that committees to look into the reservation policy, as demanded by several political parties of the state, would be placed before the Cabinet and a decision would be taken soon.
