Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has stated that the prepaid electricity meters will be installed for all consumers in the state by December, 2022.
He was attending Grand Finale of Bijili Mahotsav & Ujala Diwas (Ujjwal Bharat, Ujjwal Bhavishya) today at City Convention Centre in Imphal.
Manipur is one of the first states in India to introduce the prepaid power supply system.
N Biren Singh also pointed out prepaid meters have been installed and made functional for 4.1 lakh out of total 5.06 lakh consumers so far. The remaining will be connected with prepaid meters by the end of this year.
The Chief Minister further said that the government spends an amount of Rs 350 crore annually in purchasing electricity from power companies.
While the government purchases electricity at the rate of Rs 10 per unit, he said that the same is being provided to the consumers at the rate of Rs 4.50 per unit.
He appealed to the people to avoid electricity wastage in every possible way.
Meanwhile, power minister Th. Biswajit said that the government would be implementing the Revamp Distribution Sector Scheme in the state within a short span of time.
The centre has sanctioned Rs 389 crore for the first phase of the scheme, he said adding that power supply will be highly improved and people will get uninterrupted power supply when the scheme gets implemented.
