Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik resigns as Tripura MLA

The union minister of state for social justice and empowerment Pratima Bhoumik has resigned from the state legislature while remaining as a member of the union council of ministers.

She submitted her resignation to Speaker (Pro-tem) Binoy Bhushan Das.

After tendering her resignation, Bhoumik took to Twitter and expressed her pride in being a daughter of the Dhanpur village of Tripura. She said, “I don’t know what I could give to Dhanpur in exchange for everything that it gave me without asking and that I owe Dhanpur a real debt of gratitude.”

She added that although she had resigned from her position as an MLA, she would still stand by the public’s side and urged people to create the greatest Dhanpur and Tripura.

“ধনপুর, আমার জন্মভূমি, আমার প্রথম কর্মভূমি। আমি বরাবরই গর্বিত আমি ত্রিপুরার প্রান্তিক গ্রাম ধনপুরের মেয়ে। ধনপুর আমাকে না চাইতেও অনেক দিয়েছে, বিনিময়ে আমি কি দিতে পেরেছি জানিনা। আজকের দিনে হিসাব কষতে গেলে আমি সত্যিই ধনপুরের কাছে ঋণী।,” She tweeted in Bengali language.

Pratima Bhoumik contested the 2023 State Assembly elections from her home constituency Dhanpur which has been a CPI-M bastion since 1972 and won by a margin of 3,500 votes against CPM’s Kaushik Chanda.

Bhoumik is the first woman politician from Tripura and the second from the Northeast to become a Union Minister.

She has been a BJP loyalist, never switching parties in a state where party hopping is common.

Pratima Bhowmik was born in 1969. She is a bio-science graduate from Women’s College in Agartala, Pratima was a part of the BJP since 1991.
