Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today met the brave hearts who selflessly endeavoured to rescue victims of the tragic Majuli boat mishap on September 8, 2021.

The Chief Minister handed over cheques of Rs 25,000 to each of the 50 brave-hearts in Majuli who selflessly helped in rescuing the victims from the Brahmaputra river.

Taking to his Twitter handle, CM Sarma wrote, “I salute the bravery of those who selflessly endeavoured to rescue victims of the tragic Majuli boat mishap on Sept 8. In gratitude, handed over cheques of Rs 25,000 to each of the 50 such brave-hearts in Majuli. Their act will keep inspiring others to work for humanity.”

In the Majuli boat mishap, as many as three persons died when a private boat with 92 people on board capsized and sank in the Brahmaputra river on September 8 evening, following a head-on collision with a government-owned ferry steamer near Nimati Ghat in Jorhat.

While a woman died in hospital after she was rescued from the river on the day of the accident.

Later the body of one missing person was recovered on September 11.

Twelve people, including the owner of the boat and six employees of the Inland Water Transport Department, have been arrested in connection with a case registered by the Jorhat Police in connection with the accident.
