Highly concerned over the worn out condition of National Highway-6, at least 5 MPs from the Northeast have written to Union Minister of Road Transport and National Highways Nitin Gadkari seeking his urgent intervention into the matter. The National Highway-6 connects Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.
Shillong Lok Sabha MP Vincent Pala (Meghalaya), Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy (Assam), Karbi Anglong Lok Sabha MP Haren Singh Bey (Assam), Tripura East MP Rebati Tripura and Mizoram Lok Sabha MP C Lalrosanga have written to the Union Minister stating, “The state of NH-6 is currently in a severly dilapidated condition, causing immense inconvenience to the people of these regions and posing a significant threat to their safety.”
The MPs pointed out that the road has not seen sustained repair or maintenance in the past year which aggravated the woes of the commuters which includes increased travel time, accidents and disruption in transportation of essential goods.
Apart from this, the MPs in the letter stated that there has been an increase in traffic owing to mining activities in Meghalaya as well as due to growing economic interdependence between the states connected by NH-6. Citing this, the MPs highlighted that the existing 2-lane road is no longer enough to handle the increasing traffic. This in the meantime has led to traffic congestion as well as other associated negative impact.
In view of this situation, the MPs have urged Nitin Gadkari for:
