Renowned Nagaland writer Dr Temsula Ao passes away

Dr Temsüla Ao, a well-known poet, novelist, and ethnographer from Nagaland, passed away on Sunday evening at Eden Medical Center in Dimapur.

Padma Shri Dr. Temsüla Ao, a well-known poet, novelist, and ethnographer from Nagaland, passed away on Sunday evening at Eden Medical Center in Dimapur. She was 80.

Dr. Temsula leaves behind a son, two daughters and grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held at the family residence in Lengrijan Dimapur.

Late Temsula Longkumer was the wife of late Assamwati Longkumer, a former MLA, and the mother of existing DGP Nagaland TJ Longkumer. 

She also served as the director of the North East Zone Cultural Center.

Along with the Sahitya Akademi Award, she was also the recipient of the Governor’s Gold Medal (Meghalaya 2009).

Her works have been translated into German, French, Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi. She is considered as one of the major literary voices in English to emerge from Northeast India.

She also served a professor of English at North Eastern Hill University and was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Minnesota, USA.

She has so far published two short story collections-These Hills Called Home: Stories from the War Zone and Laburnum for my Head, along with five poetic works, a book on Henry James Quest for an Ideal Heroine, a book on Ao-Naga Oral Tradition.
