Nagaland Landslide: Death Toll Rises to 6, Several Injured, NH-29 Remains Cut Off

The death toll from the massive landslide that struck Pherima Village in Nagaland’s Chumukedima district last night has risen to six.
The deceased persons have been identified as- Khriesangulie (46) and Anhieii (57 ), residents of Kijumetuma; Samla Dutta (43), Daju (60) and Vijay (28) of Pherima and Sopon Biswas (52).
As per sources, several persons who sustained grave injuries are undergoing treatment at a hospital and many are missing.
Rescue operations are underway as emergency services and local authorities work to help the affected people, provide medical aid to the injured and to trace the missing.
Dimapur Police and Chumukedima Administration are on the spot taking stock of the situation.
Multiple landslides have also disrupted the National Highway 29 that connects Dimapur, Kohima and Manipur. However, authorities have maintained that alternate routes connecting the state capital are still functional.
As per sources, one of the landslides occurred between Pagala Pahar and Pherima village last night at 11 pm.
A large chunk of a hill broke off burying houses and vehicles and destroying business establishments along the route.
The other landslide that occurred at Chumoukedima district, just near the police check gate, has also cut off the highway.
Commuters have been advised against plying on the road. Police and local administrations have informed commuters that the construction of the road is likely to take a while.
In case of emergency, people have been asked to take the Nuiland-Zhadima route.
Police departments of Kohima, Dimapur and Chumukedima as well as local organisations have been working round the clock, and all efforts are underway to clear the highway.
