Nagaland implementing 33% reservation for women in civic bodies, govt apprises SC

The Nagaland government on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that it has agreed to implement 33 percent reservation for women candidates in civic bodies.
The state government told a bench of Justices S K Kaul and M Sundresh that a resolution has been adopted in this regard at a consultative meeting held on March 9 where all the stakeholders were present.
Taking note of this development, the Supreme Court directed the Nagaland State Election commission to inform the court on the next date of hearing the schedule for the elections of Municipalities and Town councils.
The state counsel told the bench that a resolution was passed and affirmed by the Chief Minister that the state should go ahead with the 74th amendment giving reservation of 33 percent to women.
The top court said that with this there is no impediment in holding of municipal body elections providing reservation for women. The bench also stated that the state electoral commission reports that they have already launched a process of summary modification that will take place in two months.
The apex court had earlier chastised the Nagaland government over the delay to enforce reservation for women in the state’s urban local bodies, saying an important aspect of gender equality seems to be getting postponed.
