In some good news for Mizoram, External Affairs Secretary (East) Saurabh Kumar has assured lone Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram K. Vanlalvena and former Lok Sabha member from the state, Vanlalzawma that efforts would be made to establish Indo-Myanmar border trade centre at Zorinpui as soon as the border road construction is completed.
Zorinpui is located at Mizoram-Myanmar border in southernmost Lawngtlai district.
Vanlalvena and Vanlalzawma informed Kumar that formation cutting of road between Zorinpui and Paletwa in Chin state of Myanmar, known as the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Tranport Project (KMMTTP) has been completed.
“If the construction of the proposed border trade centre at Zorinpui is not completed before the completion of the road construction, it would mean delay in implementation of the Indo-Myanmar border trade in south Mizoram,” they told the MEA Secretary.
Kumar informed the MP and former MP from Mizoram that there were some difficulties in construction of the KMMTTP resulting in the delay. But things have been running smoothly now.
He said that when commodities are brought to Mizoram from the Bay of Bengal via the river Chhimtuipui (Kaladan), it will not only benefit Mizoram but also the entire northeastern states.
The KMMTT project works commenced after the Indian and Myanmar governments signed an agreement for linking river Chhimtuipui with Sittwe port in Myanmar in 2008.
