The Centre has so far allocated Rs 5,021.45 crore for the construction of the Bairabi-Sairang-
Sihhmui rail project from the border of Assam (Bairabi) to Mizoram. The first and only rail project of Mizoram was cleared at an initial estimated cost of Rs 7000 crore.
Rs. 915 crore has been allocated for the coming 2023-24 financial year, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Parliament on Friday.
The Union Minister was replying to a question from K. Vanlalvena, the lone Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram regarding the project.
The Railway minister said that of the total Rs 7,000 crore earmarked for the completion of the railway project, Rs 5,021.45 crore have been sanctioned so far.
The date of completion of the project is yet to be determined due to several reasons, the minister said.
Replying to another query from Vanlalvena, the Minister said that there is no proposal yet for a railway line from Sairang to Zorinpui along the Mizoram-Myanmar border. Zorinpui is a trade centre of Mizoram.
However, the Minister did say that the rail line can be built on a need-basis.
The construction work for the Bairabi-Sairang-Sihhmui rail project encountered numerous problems, including compensation payment, which prolonged the construction period and caused the completion date to be changed several times.
